BUSINESS IN NEW ZEALAND

Plan a New Zealand business around sound decisions.

Buying or starting a business calls for commercial research, a realistic operating plan and the right professional team. If you also plan to move to New Zealand, examine immigration requirements separately before making commitments.

Set out the commercial plan

Describe the product or service, likely customers, your role and the location you are considering. Test the assumptions behind revenue, staffing, premises and working capital.

Whether you are exploring a new venture or an existing business, make a list of what is known, what needs evidence and what depends on a third-party decision.

Investigate an acquisition before committing

For an existing business, ask your lawyer and accountant which records and checks they need. Financial history, leases, contracts, staff obligations and ownership of important assets may all affect the decision.

Marketing material and an asking price do not establish the value or suitability of a business. Use independent due diligence and clear engagement terms before signing or transferring funds.

Separate immigration and operating questions

Immigration New Zealand publishes information about the Business Investor Work Visa and other investment-related options. Their requirements must be checked against current official guidance.

A commercially attractive business is not automatically an acceptable immigration investment. A licensed or exempt immigration professional should address the personal immigration questions, while commercial specialists assess the business.

Build the right professional conversation

LM can help organise your first questions and discuss an introduction to legal, accounting, business or immigration professionals where appropriate. Confirm the exact service, availability, fees and responsibilities before proceeding.

Do not include bank credentials, sensitive financial records or identity numbers in your first message. Start with your objective and the area where you need support. No business, profit, job or immigration outcome is guaranteed.

Common questions

Does forming a New Zealand company give me a work visa?

No. Company formation and immigration permission are separate. Ask an appropriately authorised professional about your personal position.

Can LM recommend a business to buy?

Start with an enquiry about the support you need. Any commercial proposal requires independent due diligence, agreed professional scope and a clear explanation of any relevant referral relationship.
